My Coat

This may seem a silly thing to most. I’m not sure the reason to post this ether. But that is what this blog is for, to post my random thoughts and ideas. So with that said here we go.

Have any of you ever grown fond of an article of clothing in your wardrobe? I know we probably all have our favorite pieces. Some that make us feel confident. Some that make us feel comfortable. But what about a piece that you would take everywhere with you? A piece that has withstood the beating of the adventurers you have been on? The piece that without a second thought you reach for before heading out the door? I would answer all those questions with a resounding “yes!”.

My coat, is not anything remarkable. I wouldn’t classify it as a statement piece. Many probably have given it no notice at all. But to me it is one of my favorite things I own. I can’t count how many years I have had it. I do remember the day and store that I bought it. I wish I could say I knew then how I would feel now about my coat. Unfortunately I don’t possess that kind of foresight. Funny how a small decision made in a Banana Republic Factory can remain with you for so long.

As I have said my coat is nothing remarkable. It is dark blur, and cut short, landing at the waist. It has aged brass snap buttons on the cuffs and on the zipper flap down the front. The texture is almost like a Denim Cotton, but is far thicker and sturdier. It has three pockets two at the waist and one just inside at chest level, in the lining. The latter is probably my favorite. It is versatile, in that, it is good for a cool day, but can be layered when the weather gets colder.

Now why fuss about a silly coat. Well this coat has been with me for quite some time. It has been on many of my adventures. It has been to London. It has been to Paris. It has been to the Hawaiian islands. It has even been to the islands of the Caribbean. It as served as a pillow and blanket on long flights. It has been a guard against the rain, wind, and snow. It has seen many an airplane and airport for that matter. I’m sure it’s a little radioactive after all the TSA X-ray machines it has been through. I think I feel the same way about my coat as Indiana Jones feels about his coat. Thought many overlook his coat too, but more so because of the hat. But do you think he even dares to be drug behind a truck without his coat? I think not. Just like I can’t imagine a trip to unknown places without mine.

The march or time is unstoppable and with comes age. Ware and tear is what fallow all things as they exist in this world. Items of fabric and thread are no exceptional. It seems they may be one of the most prone to it, maybe save items of paper. This is true of my coat. It is faded and becoming tattered. On the whole there are no holes. But because of its age I have been pondering on finding a replacement. It has been more difficult than imagined. I have looked high and low for a coat that could replicate all the things I love about my coat. I have search high and low scouring websites and retails merchants, to no avail. The closest I have come was a leather jacket that was the right cut, had all the pockets, and fit like glove. But then the price, $500.00! I was very tempered. However I’m not sure if giving up my well worn memory filled coat was worth $500.

With all things, there will come a day, I will need to part ways with my old coat. But until that day comes I will continue to make memories wearing my coat.
